Belfair History and time line.
1811– Belfair was established when William Telfair of Savannah married Betsey Bellinger. They took the first part of “Bellinger” and the last of “Telfair” to name their new plantation Belfair. Belfair was originally a country estate and working plantation devoted to agriculture.
1852– The town of Bluffton is officially incorporated.
1860– South Carolina becomes the first state to withdraw from the Union.
1927– Belfair was purchased by a new owner, William Mosely Swain. He planted the oaks that now constitute the magnificent Avenue of the Oaks.
1953– Belfair is operated as a cattle ranch.
1963-1968– Cattle operation is sold and Belfair operated as a turkey farm.
1994– Belfair Plantation, L.L.C., the developer of Belfair, purchased the property in September 1994 to create a world class private golfing community that consists of 730 home sites with 40 non property memberships and a maximum membership of 770.
1996– The West Course opens.
1999– The East Course and Phase I of the Clubhouse has grand opening.
2000– The transition Board is appointed and the Belfair Property Owners’ Association is established as a not-for-profit homeowners’ association. Phase II of the Clubhouse opens in October.
2010– Fifteenth Anniversary and unveiling of a history book, Belfair: Beyond the Avenue of Oaks.
Approximately 1100 acres in size, Belfair is located on the mainland in Bluffton, SC five miles from Hilton Head Island, SC on Highway 278. Its waterfront side faces the marshes of the Colleton River. Belfair is 25 miles north of Savannah, GA, 32 miles south of Beaufort, SC,
